You buy a share percentage of the home, which is usually 25-75%, pay a subsidised rent on the remaining share and pay a service charge.     Am I eligible for Shared Ownership?
    To qualify for Shared Ownership, individuals must be over 18 years old and residents in the UK. There is a household income threshold. You must have a household income threshold of less than £80,000, but this increases to £90,000 if you buy a home in London.
    Can I buy more shares?
    Yes, you can buy more shares at a later date after you purchase your home. This is known as 'staircasing' and the amount your increase will depend on how much you can afford. Buying more shares will reduce future rent payments. Eventually you could own 100% of your home.
    How much deposit do I need?
    This depends on the full market value of the property and the size of the share you are purchasing, your mortgage lender and your credit rating. The benefit of Shared Ownership is that the deposit required will be significantly lower than if you were purchasing the property outright because you only need a deposit on the share you are buying. You should expect to have at least 5% deposit saved. Your mortgage advisor will tell you the exact amount of deposit you need.
